Transformative Leadership: Guest Session with Mr. Anil Keshary Shah for MBA Students at Embark College - Embark College

Embark College hosted an inspiring and highly impactful guest session on 19th January 2026, exclusively for MBA students, focusing on the theme of Transformative Leadership. The session was delivered by Mr. Anil Keshary Shah, one of Nepal’s most celebrated and influential banking leaders, visionary executives, and advocates for ethical, people-centered leadership. As the former CEO of Nabil Bank (where he made history as the first Nepali citizen to lead the institution) and Mega Bank, and a pioneer in inclusive banking and organizational transformation, Mr. Shah drew from over three decades of hands-on experience to guide students through the principles, practices, and personal journeys that define truly transformative leaders in business and society.

The lecture began by redefining leadership beyond traditional hierarchies and authority. Mr. Shah
described transformative leadership as the ability to inspire profound change—not just in organizations,
but in people, cultures, and communities, by aligning vision, values, and action. He contrasted
transactional leadership (focused on rewards and compliance) with transformational approaches that
emphasize inspiration, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, and idealized influence.
Drawing from his own career milestones, he illustrated how leaders can catalyze growth in challenging
environments: turning Nabil Bank into Nepal’s top-performing institution by doubling deposits and loans
through innovative strategies, customer-centric reforms, and team empowerment; and at Mega Bank,
pioneering inclusive banking models that extended financial services to underserved rural farmers and
small entrepreneurs across 63 districts via widespread promoter networks.

For MBA students preparing to assume senior roles in Nepal’s dynamic economy, the session offered
practical frameworks for leading transformation. Mr. Shah emphasized key elements: cultivating a clear,
compelling vision that resonates emotionally and strategically; building high-trust cultures through
transparency and empathy; fostering innovation by encouraging calculated risk-taking and learning from
failures; and prioritizing stakeholder value including employees, customers, communities, and
shareholders over short-term profits. He shared real-world examples from Nepal’s banking sector, such
as navigating regulatory complexities, economic volatility, political influences, and the shift toward digital
and inclusive finance. He highlighted how transformative leaders act as “orchestra conductors,”
coordinating diverse talents rather than dominating every decision, and how this mindset drives
sustainable organizational success.

The discussion extended to Nepal-specific contexts, where leaders often balance global best practices
with local realities: cultural emphasis on relationships and hierarchy, the need for financial inclusion
amid urban-rural divides, the influence of remittances and diaspora, and the push for ethical governance
in a post-federalism era. Mr. Shah reflected on challenges like talent retention, succession planning, and
maintaining integrity amid pressures, urging students to lead with authenticity and resilience. He also
addressed the human side of transformation, managing resistance to change, supporting employee
well-being during restructurings, and ensuring leadership development cascades throughout organizations.

Ethical leadership formed a cornerstone of the session. Mr. Shah advocated for “rashtrabhakta”
(nation-loving) yet pragmatic approaches: using business success to contribute to national development, promoting meritocracy, and upholding integrity even when difficult. He drew from his broader contributions, including board roles at the Nepal Investment Board, Nepal-USA Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nepal Bankers’ Association, and even sports governance with the All Nepal Football Association. After retiring from active banking in 2022, he founded Lead Nepal Inc. to scale his impact through leadership training and development programs, reflecting his commitment to multiplying
transformative leaders across sectors.

Mr. Anil Keshary Shah’s remarkable background lent unparalleled credibility and motivation. Starting his
career in 1991 as an assistant earning a modest Rs. 3,500 at Grindlays Bank (later Standard Chartered), he rose through perseverance, earning an MBA from Delhi University and executive education from
institutions like Harvard Kennedy School and George Washington University. He served as Head of
Consumer Banking and COO at Standard Chartered Nepal, CEO of Mega Bank, and twice as CEO of Nabil Bank, earning multiple “Top CEO” awards from The Boss Business Excellence Awards in 2005–2007. His journey exemplifies merit-based ascent in Nepal’s corporate landscape, and his post-banking focus on leadership advocacy including public speaking, motivational engagements, and initiatives like joining the Rastriya Swatantra Party’s training department continues to influence emerging leaders.

The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A, where MBA students probed career strategies for
transformative roles, balancing ambition with ethics, leading in uncertain environments, and applying
lessons to startups, family businesses, or multinational settings in Nepal. Reflections centered on
personal growth: how to develop self-awareness, build resilient teams, and create lasting impact beyond
financial metrics.
